Pullman's new offices toured with Clients!

Pullman Head Office, Everett Smith Group (ESG) House, Chatsworth Road, Harrogate, HG1 5HX.

Last October the Pullman Instruments team left its old home on Chatsworth Terrace, to move a whole 100 yards to its new labs and offices, which have been visited by several clients who were able to tour the offices with the help of Pullman Directors Mark Kendall and Tony Cox .

All the clients were thoroughly impressed by the sophisticated and aesthetic flow of the building and the meticulous organisation of all the departments, while receiving a warm welcome from all Pullman staff. The arranged tour of the various departments allowed the visiting clients to meet the teams of sales, engineers and technicians as well as administrative staff. The clients were obviously intrigued by the information provided on the different services and products, how they are implemented, and the testing procedures which guarantee the company’s commitment to quality. Many of the clients admitted that Pullman provides so much more than they anticipated, which was such a positive outcome!

The departmental facilities, such as the various testing labs for a variety of disciplines, piqued clients interest through the days, and they were impressed by the state-of-the-art equipment used in the processes of service provision. The clients had plenty of questions, and Pullman staff kindly provided detailed explanations to answer all their queries. As the offices are spacious and airy with the perfect balance of natural and artifical light, all the visitors enjoyed the sense of calm throughout, creating a perfect environment to listen and engage.

The visit was made complete when the clients were taken to the boardroom, where they were able to follow up on some of the discussion points during the tour. The clients gave feedback with many feeling that the tour was insightful and provided them with an enlarged understanding of the company. They were impressed with the professionalism demonstrated by the staff and were pleased to know that Pullman are at the forefront of innovation in the industry, leaving them all with confidence in the reliability and trustworthiness of Pullman Instruments.

Pullman Director, Mark Kendall, said of the week with visiting clients, " We're grateful for all those who came and spent time with us and were pleased to show them the extensive work we've put in over the last few years, and the positive outcomes we've had, through listening to client needs which can help them with their work. It's really pleasing that so many enjoyed their visit and we look forward to working with them all in future! ".

ESG House is ready and working!

On Monday 10th October 2022, after a period of almost 2 years of waiting, the Pullman Instruments team left its old home on Chatsworth Terrace, to move the mighty distance of 100 yards to its new labs and offices, now at the above address.

The opening was a low key one, with only the local staff at Pullman Instruments attending this initial informal opening, plans are already in place to hold a full group open day on 2nd December 2022, where all of the remote labs will be attending.

Beryl Smith, one of the founders of the company, was invited to officially open the building. At the opening, Beryl was quite emotional about the events of the day, she said, “she wished her husband, Colin, was still here to see the progress and development that had happened over the past five or six years at Pullman Instruments”. Beryl was impressed with all of the hard work that had been done to bring ESG House up to the high standard that has been achieved.

Pullman Instruments begins a new chapter in its more than four decades history, with the new location being named after both of the CEO, Nathan Smith’s parents, Colin and Beryl (nee Everett) Smith.

Nathan, Group CEO, son of Beryl, said, “it has been a long time coming this move, after the purchase of the Norville Optical building in 2019. The purchase raised great excitement about Pullman moving and then everything changed, with the onset of a global pandemic and health crisis. We shelved everything, because we were so uncertain about what would happen to us, our staff, our customers, it was a difficult time for everyone”. As things began to change and there appeared to be some sense of normality returning, the Pullman move was resurrected and in late 2021, the plans were laid, and the process began to make ESG House happen. In commenting on this Nathan said, “I just knew that we had to get Pullman settled into a new home, away from the building share with Flow-mon that had happened for over 20years”. Nathan, working alongside Tony Cox, Operations Director at Pullman, put the plans into effect. Contractors were hired and the work of gutting and redeveloping began in earnest. Some 12 months later, after many delays, such as, electricity supply issues and contractors impacting on time scales, the day finally happened. “This is a milestone day for Pullman”, Nathan said, “we would not be here if it were not for good planning, and hard work and dedication on the part of the Pullman team” .

Mark Kendall, Director at Pullman Instruments commented on how the move will enable an increased level of excellence, with a greater control over our systems, workflow and throughput, all done to benefit its customers both old and new. The move has provided the team at Pullman with a greater sense of unity, which has come through the hard work and effort put in by all to get all areas up and running. In line with investments in the new building, new disciplines are being brought on board. These disciplines are Torque meter calibration to precision standards, Torque multiplication and New Medical device tester calibration systems.

After more than 40 years, Pullman Instruments has a dedicated centre of excellence, supporting its customer base throughout the UK. We will be holding open day events in January, dates to follow, but all are welcome to come and see us.

Our New Premises - ESG House!

Pullman have been providing calibration services from Chatsworth House since 2001 and our business has continued to expand. However, the time has come to say goodbye. We have outgrown our old premises and it's time for us to move on!

But don't worry, we've not gone far! In fact, our new building is only 200 metres away from our previous building, with purpose-built workshops, offices and storage. Our move allows Pullman to continue to expand and grow, to provide a much more fulfilled service to our customers, delivering more stock, larger workshops and more calibration services.

The relocation took take place on 5th October 2022 and we look forward to inviting you to come and take a look around and find out more how our move will help you!

Big Changes at Pullman Offices!

It’s been a big week of change over the Pullman Instruments sites!

Our colleague & friend Bob Kirby who has headed our Wigan laboratory as Office manager retired this week. Happy retirement Bob! Dave Almond who has worked with Bob for the past few years has taken over the roll, A new driver / representative will join Dave and the team at Wigan next week.

Our Weston Super-Mare laboratory celebrates its 20th year in 2021! 2 decades of supporting our customers in that area. In recognition of this mile stone Richard Deverson who has been fundamental in growing & supporting this area has been appointed as Office Manager. We are grateful for Richard’s hard work along with that of the team at our Weston office.

We are happy to welcome Dave & Richard to the management team.

At our head office at Harrogate we excited at the prospect of moving into our new building, the re-commission of the site is going well and we hope to be in and settled before the year is out.

October sees our Harrogate site welcoming a new calibration Technician, Logistics coordinator and a kick start appointment for the sales team.

We are excited for the changes that are a foot and look forwards to continuing to deliver our customers a compliant & reliable service!

We are pleased to announce that our laboratory in Harrogate will further add to its Torque capabilities. We will be bringing on line in the next few months High Torque capabilities, this will be used to perform calibrations on Torque Multipliers. Working in conjunction with one of our partners, COMAR ENGIEERING have designed and will be building the dedicated rig, and we will be relying on the NORBAR range of sensors and instrumentation to complete this process development.

So how do Torque Multipliers work?

Torque multipliers typically employ an epicyclic gear train having one or more stages. Each stage of gearing multiplies the torque applied. In epicyclic gear systems, torque is applied to the input gear or ‘sun’ gear. A number of planet gears are arranged around and engaged with this sun gear, and therefore rotate. The outside casing of the multiplier is also engaged with the planet gear teeth, but is prevented from rotating by means of a reaction arm, causing the planet gears to orbit around the sun gear. The planet gears are held in a ‘planet carrier' which also holds the output drive shaft. As the planet gears orbit around the sun gear, the carrier and the output shaft rotate together. Without the reaction arm to prevent rotation of the outer casing, the output shaft cannot apply torque.

Where are Torque Multipliers commonly used?

Torque multipliers are most often used when a compressed air powered impact wrench is unavailable due to remote locations without power, or where cost considerations require manually operated tools which do not require any power supply or power source of any kind. There are many instances where screws, bolts and other fasteners are secured so tightly that using a typical lug wrench with a cheater bar is not sufficient to loosen them. These include automotive repair and assembly, Rail Infrastructure, construction projects, heavy equipment maintenance and other instances where high torque output is needed. A torque multiplier allows the user to generate high torque output without the use of an air compressor or impact gun.

Climatic Services - New UKAS Accreditation

Pullman Instruments are pleased to announce that Climatic Services Ltd., have undergone a UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Services) audit and are an accredited UKAS laboratory.

Their UKAS laboratory number is 10391 with Climatic Services becoming compliant with the new ISO-IEC 17025-2017 standard. Everett Smith Group Announces Merger

The Everett Smith Group Announces the merger of Calibration UK Ltd and Milton Keynes Instrumentation Services Ltd into Pullman Instruments (UK) Ltd.

As part of the growth strategy for the Everett Smith Group Ltd, acquisitions were made of Calibration UK Ltd and Milton Keynes Instrumentation Services Ltd to enhance the calibration capabilities, and geographical presence in the UK calibration sector.

With effect from 1st August 2019 both Calibration UK Ltd and Milton Keynes Instrumentation Services Ltd have been merged with Pullman Instruments (UK) Ltd based in Harrogate North Yorkshire. Pullman is also an Everett Smith Group company and has given technical and management assistance to both companies since their acquisition.

After the merger Calibration UK in Wigan will be known as Pullman Instruments North West, with MKIS being known as Pullman Instruments Central.

Nathan Smith, CEO of the Everett Smith Group said, “ Both companies have been operating as separate legal entities, but it is now time to bring these smaller calibration companies into the Pullman Brand, it will provide greater opportunities for our increasing customer base to benefit from the wealth of expertise and knowledge we have at the Harrogate centre of excellence” .

ESG acquires MKIS (Milton Keynes Instrumentation Services)

Pullman Instruments are delighted to announce that on 7th June 2018 the business of Milton Keynes Instrumentation Services [MKIS} was acquired by the Everett Smith Group whose head office is in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. Other companies in The Everett Smith Group (including Pullman Instruments) are Climatic Services Ltd (environmental chamber engineers), Calibration UK Ltd (dimensional and Mechanical Calibration Specialists) and Flow-Mon Ltd (manufacturers of flow meters).

Of the three owners of MKIS, two are retiring. They wanted to find a company who would look after their existing customers and who are able to support and add value to their excellent service. Richard Towsend will be joining MKIS Ltd on a permanent full time basis, while Colin Kemp and Raymond Younger will be joining us on a temporary basis to assist with the transition.

We are honoured that Richard, Colin and Raymond chose The Everett Smith Group to carry on their business.

Blood Mapping and the MHRA - Pullman Instruments Special Projects

Network Rail - Pullman wins Major Contracts

Pullman Instruments are pleased to announce that they have been successful in winning major contracts with Network Rail for the next 5 years.

Following months of work by senior management and the sales staff in Pullman head office in Harrogate, Pullman was awarded 2 contracts covering Wales and Scotland areas of the UK. to provide extensive services throughout the Network Rail organisation.

Climatic Services Extends use of Climatic Testing Facilities

As the Everett Smith Group Ltd (ESG) continues to grow and geographical presence, as does the core capabilities in each of the companies in the group.

Pullman Instruments are pleased to announce that with the success experienced over many years Climatic Services have widened their scope of coverage for their Climatic testing facilities to each ESG group companies. This will mean a huge expansion expanding group capabilities, enabling all five branches to make full use of increased capabilities and capacities, thus increasing the range of services available to each client, wherever they may be in the UK.

All of the five business branches can make use of the specialised services of repair, calibration, sale and hire of Climatic test chambers.

The services include the hire of chambers located in our branches for customers to use, conducting their own climatic testing. The support of qualified Pullman Instruments engineers is available to support the process from start-up, programming of tests, culminating in traceable audit reports and certification.
